Grid Crasher rounds up the key stories from testing in Spain
Day One (Monday): Ferrari’s Felipe Massa set the fastest pace at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya on day one of the four-day F1 test session. Nine teams were in action, each fielding a single car, with the majority evaluating new components and aerodynamic packages ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix. [Official F1 site]
Day Two (Tuesday): Force India driver Vitantonio Liuzzi hailed Bridgestone’s slick tyres as “amazing” after testing with them for the first time yesterday. The Italian test driver was also working with a 2009 aero configuration, with less downforce in his car. [Autosport]
Honda’s improvement continues apace: Rubens Barrichello led the way during yesterday’s second day of testing in Barcelona. His quickest lap, 0.6secs slower than Massa’s opening salvo, was set on slick tyres as teams test the Bridgestone rubber ahead of their use from the start of the 2009 season. The team also showed off a variation on last year’s “Dumbo ears” front wing (pictured above). [PA]
Renault unveiled a new engine cover fin on its R28 car at Barcelona yesterday. The struggling team is trying out a number of aerodynamic tweaks in a bid to improve its pace, and perhaps stop Fernando Alonso from buggering off to Ferrari. [ITV Sport]
Ferrari also debuted a radical new nose cone in Barcelona – reports claim that details of the cone were leaked, prompting inevitable speculation that the team still has a spy in its midst. More on that later this morning…
