Is Alonso’s new Renault the ugliest F1 car you’ve ever seen?

Look at the state of Fernando Alonso’s Renault, snapped during testing at Barcelona yesterday. What a mess. The R28 is sporting a hideous new “shark-fin” engine cover, which takes its design cues from Red Bull’s similar engine cover, not to mention several other aerodynamic parts that don’t exactly help the car’s good looks. With all such aero add-ons set to be banned from next season, it seems that car designers are trying anything they possibly can, and with spectacularly ugly results. More pics right this way…

As grotesque as it is, the experimental Renault has so far been the quickest car of the day in Barcelona, so it isn’t all bad news for its pilot, Alonso.

    […] Although it’s not the highest-quality picture, we like what we see - especially the tall rear wing, which harks back to a different era in F1. The new rules for 2009, which require teams to simplify the design of aero parts, will certainly result in better-looking cars than we saw in 2008 (remember this monstrosity). […]
