U.S. town has better sense of humour than U.S.
Illinois, U.S.A: In an attempt to get reckless drivers to pay attention to road signs, the residents of Oak Hill agreed to install smaller signs below their larger, legal counterparts (see above). We’d probably raise a smile the first couple of times we saw them, but after that the effect would quickly wear off, to be replaced by the original thought: “Damn, I’m late for work again, screw these legal road signs… oops…”
However, the Illinois Department of Transportation asserted that the signs violated the Fed’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (sounds like one thrilling manual). And so $1,700 worth of slightly amusing signs were taken down.
They would have gotten away with it if it weren’t for those pesky bureaucrats.
