Grid Crasher awards its marks for Monte Carlo…
Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari (finished 9th)
What’s going in in the Finn’s head? Monaco ‘08 was his worst race in years. Desperately slow all weekend and frankly didn’t deserve to score any points. 2/10
Felipe Massa, Ferrari (3rd)
For a man who claims not to like Monaco’s street circuit, he drove a solid race, apart from a couple of spins - but he wasn’t the only driver to lose control of his car in treacherous conditions. Ferrari’s one-stop strategy arguably cost him a victory. 7
Lewis Hamilton, McLaren (1st)
Lucky with enforced pit stop early on, but deserved his maiden Monaco victory - there will be more. Recovered well from his early brush with the wall and was mesmerisingly brilliant in the middle section. 9
Heikki Kovalainen, McLaren (8th)
Scored the second-fastest lap of the race, but again had no fortune: a software glitch forced him to start from pit lane, which destroyed his chances of making the podium. Still, McLaren seem to love him and he’s proving to be the ideal No.2 to Lewis, i.e. he doesn’t complain when things go wrong. 6
Robert Kubica, BMW Sauber (2nd)
The only driver not to make a glaring mistake, and fully warranted his third podium finish of 2008. The man of the season so far, no question. 9
Nick Heidfeld, BMW Sauber (14th)
The German is very low on confidence (having Kubica as a team-mate must be tough right now), and never recovered from a dreadful qualifying performance on Saturday. Could have scored some points, but a shunt by Fernando Alonso dashed his chances of a top-eight finish. 4
Mark Webber, Red Bull (4th)
Mr Reliable kept his head down and got the job done again. Has now scored valuable points in five consecutive races. 8
David Coulthard, Red Bull (DNF)
DC’s season horribilis continues. Usually does well in Monaco, but couldn’t handle the wet conditions and crashed out after just seven laps. Another driver who is being embarrassed by the performance of his team-mate. 3
Nico Rosberg, Williams (DNF)
Did very well in qualifying and was fast all weekend - Monaco is his self-appointed home circuit - but drove too wildly at times and needed two new front wings during the race. Must raise his game soon. 5
Kazuki Nakajima, Williams (7th)
Put in a fastest lap and didn’t crash out. A fine first showing at Monaco. 7
Fernando Alonso, Renault (10th)
Great move on Mark Webber early on, but took one too many risks and clashed with Nick Heidfeld when attempting an ill-judged pass. Fast in patches, but inconsistent. He can’t take all the blame for that - his Renault is simply not good enough. 6
Nelson Piquet Jnr, Renault (DNF)
Still no points for Nelsinho, although he did last until lap 47. Renault put him on dry tyres too early and he crashed out soon after. Needs to improve, and fast. 4
Jenson Button, Honda (11th)
Collided with Nick Heidfeld near the end of the first lap, and hit in the rear by Kovalainen later on. A messy race, by his own admission. 5
Rubens Barrichello, Honda (6th)
Just when we wrote off old Rubens, he goes and bags a few points for struggling Honda. His best performance of the year, by far. Kept his head when all around him etc etc. 7
Sebastian Bourdais, Toro Rosso (DNF)
Followed DC into the Casino Square barrier. A race to forget. 4
Sebastien Vettel, Toro Rossi (5th)
Made the most of the conditions, and his team’s new STR3 car, having started from 19th on the grid. Pitted four times, and would have scored no points on another day, but the highly rated German deserves some luck after four DNFs in his first four races. 7
Adrian Sutil, Force India (DNF)
Drove brilliantly and was in sight of a famous fourth place, until Kimi Raikkonen locked a rear wheel and slammed into his backside. Made the most of other drivers’ misfortunes, but he did set a fastest lap and showed great composure to keep Raikkonen at bay. 8
Giancarlo Fisichella, Force India (DNF)
Lost first and second gear, so can’t really be blamed for his below-par showing. Not a great way to celebrate your 200th GP. 6
Jarno Trulli, Toyota (13th)
The Italian has won at Monaco before, but that was never going to happen again in 2008. Qualified well, as he often does, but endured a torrid race. 5
Timo Glock, Toyota (12th)
All over the place. Something of a minor miracle that he made it to the finish. 5
