Canadian rocker involved in project to build viable green car
Neil Young has teamed up with performance mechanic Johnathan Goodwin with the aim of creating an affordable, mass-produced electric car. Young’s 1959 Lincoln Continental is being converted as a prototype.
The pair have already road-tested a prototype power system. They went on a 12-mile drive last week. “She was awesome,” Young said of the battery-operated car. “Her acceleration was incredible, she moved with hardly a sound.”
The test drive almost went wrong when Goodwin, who controls acceleration with a knob in the back seat (yeah, that might need some work…), twisted it the wrong way while approaching an entrance ramp and the vehicle lurched toward the rear of another car. But the alert Young, sat in the passenger seat, hit the brakes in time.
“You know, I thought long ago you could change the world by writing songs. But you can’t change the world by writing songs… we could change it with this car,” said Young.
