Former F1 driver involved in monster smash at Le Mans
Marc Gene admitted that he thought he was going to meet his maker in this massive crash, which occurred during testing for the Le Mans 24 Hours. The Spaniard was at the wheel of his Peugeot 908 (which he will share with Nicolas Minassian and ex-F1 world champ Jacques Villeneuve) when he lost control at the Porsche Curves.
Gene, currently one of Ferrari’s F1 test drivers, said of the accident:
“I thought I was not going to be alive… At that speed I completely lost the control of the car and I saw that something really horrible was going to happen. Being unharmed is a miracle.”
Gene’s car took off before slamming into the wall on the outside of the circuit. He was incredibly lucky to escape with only a fractured toe; his car was a write-off and will need to be rebuilt in time for the race, which takes place on 14/15 June.
