Make your aero devices more stable, F1 teams told

The FIA has forced F1 teams to make their “bridge wings” – aero devices that span the front wing, as shown in the above pic of McLaren’s nose - more stable, as of this weekend’s Canadian GP. Teams will have to fit a supporting stay to ensure that the bridge wing doesn’t move or flex at high speeds.

Currently, McLaren, Toro Rosso, Toyota, Renault, Red Bull, and Williams all have cars fitted with such bridge wings; only Renault runs with a central stay.

The move was made after the Turkish GP, where on-board video footage of some of the bridge wings suggested that they could be flexing, especially on the straights.

The FIA is keen to ensure that teams do not gain an unfair advantage from flexible aero add-ons, particularly at Montreal, where flexible wings can be a major advantage.

This video of Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren shows just how much the unfixed bridge wing can move:

I’m confused with your article - you say Renault has a flexible bridge wing then you say it is the only car without one. Please clarify.

@ A Ludlow: I list all the F1 teams with bridge wings, not the teams with flexible bridge wings. Renault has bridge wing with a fixed stay, the other teams have flexible wings and will need to add stays before Montreal. Hope this helps.
