Grid Crasher awards its marks for Silverstone
Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari (finished 4th)
Kimi was f**ked over by his team, who should have put new tyres on his car at the first round of pit stops - that said, Kimi was way off the pace for most of the GP. Still, looking at how Felipe Massa suffered, Kimi did well to spin off just once. He gets an extra point for setting the fastest lap of the race. 5/10
Felipe Massa, Ferrari (13th)
Public humiliation for the Brazilian. With no traction control acting as a safety net, Massa spun more times whan we can remember. Say what you like about Felipe - when he’s bad, he’s shockingly bad. 1/10
Lewis Hamilton, McLaren (1st)
He simply destroyed the rest of the field. At times he was several seconds faster than anyone else, cementing his status as F1’s current rain master. The most impressive drive of the season, by any driver… by a mile. 10
Heikki Kovalainen, McLaren (5th)
If you thought that Heikki’s pole proved that the Finn was ready to win his first GP, you were very wrong. He started well, firecely defending his lead from Lewis at the first corner, but things went downhill after that. Kovi should have finished second today - a McLaren 1-2 was there for the taking. But because he took far too long getting past slower cars, a podium opportunity was missed. 5
Robert Kubica, BMW Sauber (DNF)
It would be harsh to say that the wheels are starting to come off Kubica’s season, but the chances of him winning the championship look slimmer than ever, even if Kubica fans would point out that he’s only two points off the lead. This was the Pole’s first DNF in seven races, although there was nothing he could do when his BMW aquaplaned off the track. Until then, Bobby had driven a typically solid race. 6
Nick Heidfeld, BMW Sauber (2nd)
Two double overtakes (on Trulli and Alonso, and then the two Finns, Kovi and Kimi) in one race. Quick Nick is back! 8
Mark Webber, Red Bull (10th)
Lost control on the first lap and was lucky to avoid a scary crash when his Red Bull was pointing in the wrong direction. Never made the most of his fine quali run. 5
David Coulthard, Red Bull (DNF)
Drove Seb Vettel off the track, going for a gap that wasn’t there. Not a great way to say goodbye to Silverstone. 3
Nico Rosberg, Williams (9th)
Suspension problems meant he had to start from the pit lane. Rosberg did well to get up into the points, until he drove into the back of Timo Glock and dropped down the field. 6
Kazuki Nakajima, Williams (8th)
Lost seventh place to Trulli on the final lap, but kept his nose cleaner than most and again out-scored his team-mate. 6
Fernando Alonso, Renault (6th)
Overtaken by his team-mate, for the second successive race, but did a solid job to finish in the points. Missed out on a potential podium, but Renault made the same mistake as Ferrari did with Raikkonen, in choosing not to switch tyres in the first pit stop. Doh. 7
Nelson Piquet Jnr, Renault (DNF)
Nelsinho started well but he has to learn how to get his car to the finish. Still, there are encouraging signs that the young Brazilian is beginning to find his feet at Renault; he will have enjoyed putting one over on Alonso. 5
Jenson Button, Honda (DNF)
His place at Honda is now uncertain. Super Jens is usually strong in wet conditions, but overall he had a lousy weekend (especially contrasted with his team-mate’s performance), despite a decent enough start to the race. 4
Rubens Barrichello, Honda (3rd)
Made the most of Ross Brawn’s shrewd tyre choices, and kept his head when all around him etc. Great to see him back on the podium. 8
Sebastian Bourdais, Toro Rosso (11th)
No points but at least the Frenchman finished. 5
Sebastien Vettel, Toro Rossi (DNF)
Qualified strongly and was running well until DC drove him off the track. 7
Adrian Sutil, Force India (DNF)
Who’d want to be stuck in the worst car on the grid in conditions like that? Sutil is good in the wet, but never looked comfortable yesterday. 4
Giancarlo Fisichella, Force India (DNF)
A race to forget for Force India. Fisi will be very happy to see the back of Silverstone. 4
Jarno Trulli, Toyota (7th)
Could have scored more points, if his team switched to wet-weather tyres in the middle part of the GP. Still, this was another strong, mature performance by the evergreen Italian. After such a poor quali, two points is a decent return. 6
Timo Glock, Toyota (12th)
Outperformed by his team-mate, yet again. His F1 future is seriously in doubt. 5
