Production stills from new sci-fi car flick

Hollywood is re-making 1975 cult classic Death Race 2000, only this time it’s set in prison in a dystopian future, and it’s called simply Death Race. It stars Jason Statham (Snatch, The Transporter etc.), Tyrese Gibson (2 Fast 2 Furious, Transformers), Joan Allen (The Bourne Supremacy/Ultimatum) and Ian McShane (Lovejoy). It hits US cinemas on 22 August, and should reach the UK in the autumn.

The actors matter little, of course. It’s the Mad Max-style cars and action we want to see, not to mention huge, brutal explosions.
