Should BMW sack Nick Heidfeld and hire Fernando Alonso?

With Alonso looking to move, BMW Sauber must be ruthless

Hans-Joachim Stuck, who drove for March and Brabham in the 1970s and now heads up Volkswagen’s racing division, has added his opinion to the great “Where next for Fernando Alonso?” debate.

Stuck believes BMW Sauber should do everything in its power to sign Alonso to partner Robert Kubica.

“It’s nothing against Nick, but unlike Kubica he is not a driver who can win a world championship,” Stuck told Sport Bild. “If you can secure an Alonso for the long term, then you must.”

Grid Crasher agrees with Stuck. Drivers as good as Alonso are rare; available drivers as good as Alonso are even rarer.

Alonso is a better driver than Heidfeld. In those terms, you’d expect BMW to apply logic and wave a fat contract under the Spaniard’s nose.

Some experts doubt that the hot-headed Alonso would fit in with BMW’s ultra-professional, Teutonic approach to racing, but we think they would make a good fit. And the Spaniard is a good friend of Kubica, so perhaps the pair could get along in the manner of Lewis and Kovi.

Do you think Herr Stuck is right?

BMW should have done that last year but did not , if they don’t sign Aloson for 2009 -11 then then will never be in a position to fight for the World Championship.
I have been a BMW fan for the last 20 years and do feel very sad about the situation this year as they are now behind the two top teams.
If BMW want to be with the top teams, then the only option is to bring Alonso to that team asap. The cost of employing a great development driver should not be a factor for a firm the size of BMW.
BMW wake up to reality please or don’t talk about the championship next year and the following, thanking you.

Kubica and Alonso are great car developers. They also have a very similar driving style. But what worries me is that we could see another Lewis&Alonso like battle at German team. Nick struggles a lot this year, so BMW has a really hard nut to crack.
