Drivers worried about floodlit Grand Prix
Toyota driver Jarno Trulli has spoken out about next month’s night race in Singapore on behalf of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association. The Italian revealed that the drivers are concerned that the floodlit street race is jeopardising their safety. The issues raised relate to the lack of testing under floodlit conditions, the possible effect of rain on the raise and the lack of run-off areas on the street track.
“We are a little bit concerned,” said Trulli. “We go there, we haven’t tested, we don’t have any idea. It’s going to be a night race, it’s going to be the rainy season, so it’s not exactly what you really want from a safety point of view. It doesn’t look comfortable so far.”
And Trulli didn’t seem too happy with the suggestion that MotoGP riders had coped with a night race in Qatar without major incident. “Because riding a bike is different to driving a car,” he added. “And they were racing on a circuit and we are racing on a street circuit. They had run-off and we have walls.”
