Fernando Alonso doesn’t like the direction F1 is heading in, and he’s not afraid to say so. This week, Nando said he would think about quitting F1 if the sport adopted a standard engine from 2010.

“If they approved that, it would be the last straw. It would be time to think about retirement,” the Spaniard said at a charity event organised by ING, who sponsor his Renault team.

Alonso also claimed the new rules (see our idiot’s guide) hindered the progress of F1…

“In 2005 we had a V10 engine with 1,000 horsepower. That was what was exciting for the driver, motor racing at the limit.

“(But) We have gone from the futuristic to cars without grip or electronic aids which look like something from the past.”

Aw, diddums - can’t handle a car without your electronic aids?

As the most complete driver on the grid, you’d think Alonso would want as many electronic driver aids removed as possible, to give him a better chance of winning races. But no, we get a moan instead.

Come on Ollie, are you looking for webhits?

    In a word? Yes.

To be fair to me, he did threaten to quit, so it’s not such a big spin on his words.

I didn’t realise Renault were releasing pictures of their R29 challenger yet :-)

Well, this turd has had a lot of practice with toy hurling hasn’t he? Well, fingers crossed that we won’t see his morbid face for much longer in F1.

Ludlow - your comments are pathetic and boring.
All you do is insulting other drivers and butt-kissing Hamilton.

Hey Pierre, I said I thought Nelson Piquet was cute today so take that back. Hmmmph. Suggestion, don’t read my comments if you don’t like ‘em. Waddya say?

  • 9 Pierre // Dec 3, 2008 at 4:56 pm

But Nelson Piquet had never been a competition for Lewis huh?

I don’t like the direction F1 is heading in either. I’m glad to see Alonso speaking out against the absurd engine proposals, and I hope more drivers do the same. Do Max and Bernie honestly believe the manufacturers will stay in F1 while only being allowed to run a rebadged spec engine? A “Ferrari” Ilmor engine, a “BMW” Ilmor engine, a “Toyota” Ilmor engine…

I have to agree with Fernando’s opinion as well. I think the sport should be about technical innovation, and a showcase of the advancements in research and development, and engineering genious. I do understand where the spec engine idea is comming from- to keep more teams in F1 and even the performance of the field. I just don’t want to see the sport turn into a sophistocated form of NASCAR.

Pretty pathetic subject matter, I have to say. Fernando’s right - and I don’t even like him, I think he’s an arrogant little sod - almost the same as Hamilton actually.

If F1 switches to a spec engine, the sport as I know it will be over. I will stop watching immediately, and I won’t be surprised if Alonso or any other driver quits the formula as well. If enough teams and drivers switch to a rival formula where manufacturers can design their own engine and chassis (be it an existing or new formula), I’ll probably follow them over.

if we`re going to have a spec racing series why bother with all the technology??? lets just stick them all in go-karts and reduce the risk of anyone gettin killed!!! How can you have a Ferrari being powered by a Mercedes or Toyota engine??? The Max and Bernie Roadshow is starting to lose any semblance of credibility!!!!! :)

[…] whilst Alonso may not like the new rules, they are designed to favour the best drivers - and few would argue that the double world champ is […]

and just to let you know……Fernando says he hates Silver Cross prams from Mothercare!!! He only likes the new style 3 wheel buggies coz they`re faster and look more streamlined!!!! :)

848 you hit it on the nose. The big motor manufacturers would leave the sport, most of the little remaining development money will go with them and we may as well take all the aerodynamics off and call it Formula Vauxhall. Oh I’ve just been told someone already thought of that a while back and it was shit too!
