F1 video: Virtual onboard lap of Singapore night circuit

First look at a lap of venue for night-time GP

Ignore the fact that the guy driving this simulated lap (watch it after the jump) seems to have little concept of the correct racing line to take.

We like the look of the track. It’s fast and wide - like the new Valencia circuit - and should give drivers several oportunities to overtake; we particularly like the final two corners, fast left-handers that will propel the drivers onto the start/finish straight. When the 2009 regulations take effect, we should seem some really exciting racing at these new tracks.

F1 insider: Singapore track on schedule, pit building finished (with photos)

Venue for first night race coming along nicely

The nerve centre of the Singapore Grand Prix - the pit building at Republic Boulevard (pictured above) - has been completed, after almost a year of construction work.

The three-storey building on Marina Promenade will house 36 garages, race control facilities, a media centre, the winners’ podium, plus a Paddock Club capable of accommodating 4,000 people.

Work on the brand-new circuit, the venue for F1’s first ever night race under lights (to be held on 28 September), is going well and will reportedly be completed on time.

More exclusive pics of the circuit after the jump…

Digital flags for F1 Singapore Grand Prix

F1 turns to digi-flags for first ever night race

e_flag_main01.jpg
This season’s Singapore Grand Prix, Formula 1’s first ever night race, will be marshalled by 35 electronic “flags”, situated around the track – there will also be traditional flags, purists will be happy to know.

It’s perverse that a cutting-edge, billion-pound sport still relies on the humble flag so much, but this technological development is a sign of things to come. Developed by Italian firm Valerio Maioli, the system will be the first of its kind and could mean that motorsport finally waves goodbye to the waved flag – for night races at least.
