Vote: Can Fernando Alonso really win the title in 2009?

Nando thinks he can win the title next season. Oh, does he indeed…

Take one delusional Spaniard and a new F1 rulebook… mix well, add olive oil and lightly fry for 2-3 minutes. The result, a third drivers’ title for Alonso.

Nando is bullish about his chances of winning a third title with Renault:

“I can’t allow myself to start the championship without thinking I’m going to win,” he told reporters at a Madrid charity event organised by team sponsors ING.

“My aim - and the team’s - is the title. It’s a very clear objective, even if as the year progresses one may have to adapt to circumstances.”

Felipe Massa to give Lewis Hamilton a chance in Brazil

Ferrari title contender will stop trying on last lap at Interlagos

Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa.

Lewis Hamilton’s title hopes have been given a boost after Felipe Massa revealed that he will stop fighting for the title on the last lap of his home grand prix in Brazil. The Ferrari driver hinted that he would stop giving it his all on the final lap at Interlagos.

“We are still seven points behind, but we still have 30 points in front of us,” said Massa. “We’re going to do the best we can to fight until the last lap in the last race.”

What and then just give up, Felipe? We are not quite sure what he has planned for the last lap. Coasting round waving to his compatriots perhaps. In the interests of fair play we will suggest that he fights until the chequered flag.

Vettel: “Forget Monza, now I want the world championship!”

Italian Grand Prix winner is somewhat ambitious

Sebastian Vettel

Toro Rosso’s whipper snapper Sebastian Vettel has received more than his fair share of media attention following his unexpected victory in the boot-shaped nation. In an interview with German tabloid Bild, the 21-year-old said he was not interested in the vast sum of money that lies ahead of him, and he also sheepishly acknowledged his other record (Vettel was a little too eager in Istanbul, and received his first penalty and fine after just six seconds in Formula 1).

The babyfaced German also revealed his intention to win the world championship:

“Without the goal of reaching the top, I needn’t have bothered starting in the sport. Next year I want to attack the top teams. That is always my goal: to attack, especially in the last four races! But I have never followed a plan. Of course I know what I want: My goal is the world championship. But you can’t control where life will take you. To earn a title, everything has to fall into place.”
